A successful paddle was held. Eight people in total attended the event and 3 followed the paddle with a quick drink in Manotick. A few of these fellows were seen along the route also spotted by a few paddlers were a couple of ospreys.
The first meeting of the new 2023 season took place on March 14th. The club executive remains the same for 2023 and so the business of the new year got started.
Biggest turnout of the 2022 year. Ten paddlers started out from Curry Park in Kemptville under warm and sunny weather. We headed downstream towards the Rideau River. The water was calm and perfect for paddling. After an hour of paddling we reached the Rideau. Four paddlers turned back while the rest of us crossed the Rideau to stop for a short break at Rideau River Provincial Park. Spotted today were a few herons, some turtles, and a few fish.
A new season starts with the kayak club's first meeting of the year on Tuesday, March 8, 2022. Meetings are open to all members and are held at the Chesterville Legion at 7 pm.
Saturday’s trip to Burritts Rapids was well attended by members. Launching from the east side of the locks the group travelled east towards Kempville. Overcast skies and a bit of a wind couldn’t stop us with the lead group travelling 9km to stop for a quick lunch and stretch. After the paddle a BBQ was hosted by Heather and great food was also supplied by other club members. Celebrating Lucien’s birthday and Miles’ retirement. After the meal it was all followed up with a campfire and fireworks.
The kayak club is not just about kayaking it’s about a great group of friends that like to get together and kayak. Over the winter club members have often gotten together when Covid regulations allow. We have hiked, snowshoed, and skied various locations surrounding Chesterville. This winter we have visited Larose Forest, Alvin Runnels Forest, Limerick Forest, Long Sault Parkway, Marlborough Forest, and more locations. Kim and Lucien have been great hosts for bonfire nights that have helped make the isolation of Covid pass quicker. With the winter coming to an end and kayak season only weeks away here’s to a great winter.
Today’s trip to the Rivière Rouge was changed because of expected high winds and thunderstorms around 2pm. Instead some of the club members headed out to Lafaivre and were surprised to find perfectly calm water on the Ottawa river. A quick trip across the river and then up the Salmon River to a peaceful resting spot. Winds picked up a bit on the way back making the Ottawa river a little choppy but nothing we couldn’t handle. Back at the cars by 2pm not a drop of rain touched us.
